EMG/NCV

All of us here at Alabama Orthopedic, Spine & Sports Medicine Associates like to utilize the latest advancements in technology in order to best determine your condition. We can do just that by incorporating these tests as part of our diagnostic tools. By understanding how your nerves are working and reacting, we can take care of you wholly and completely. After all, that has always been, and remains, our goal.

WHAT IS AN EMG?

EMG stands for electromyogram and is a test that is used to record the electrical activity of the muscles. When muscles are active, they produce an electrical current which is usually proportional to the level of the muscle activity. EMGs are used to detect abnormal electrical activity of the muscle.

WHAT IS AN NCV?

A nerve conduction velocity test, or NCV, is an electrical test that is used to determine the adequacy of the conduction of the nerve impulse as it courses down the nerve. This test is used to help determine signs of nerve injury.

DOES IT HURT?

Using these tests to determine electrical nerve impulses, can at times, be uncomfortable. This is only a temporary sensation and is completely tolerable. If at any time you feel too uncomfortable or feel as if you cannot continue, just inform the technician and the test will be stopped immediately. Keep in mind, the doctor would not have ordered this test if he did not think it the best way to aid in determining your diagnosis.
