Gene L. Watterson, Jr., M.D.
"I enjoy seeing patients who have previously experienced pain progress from a state of suffering and disability to one of fuller
enjoyment of life and functionality. Rheumatology melds the subspecialty of internal medicine with the disciplines of
musculoskeletal medicine and clinical immunology. This gives me the privilege of seeing a wide variety of patients, most of whom
have good chances of feeling better and gaining improved functionality."
Dr. Gene Watterson combines expertise in the discipline of rheumatology with attentive concern for each patient as an individual.
Originally from Petersburg, Virginia, Dr. Watterson received his M.D. from the University of South Alabama. He holds a bachelor's
degree from the University of Alabama. He completed his internship at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and his residency
at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. Dr. Watterson completed a fellowship in clinical immunology and rheumatology
at the University at Birmingham.
Dr. Watterson's honors include Resident of the Year at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, and Chief Fellow for the Division of
Rheumatology at UAB. He is the author of the "Osteoarthritis" chapter for the Women's Medical Textbook and is Board Certified in
internal medicine and rheumatology.
Dr. Watterson sees a wide range of patients including both adults and adolescents, persons with occupational injuries and patients
with fibromyalgia.
